SHINING SOULS
by Chris Hannan

SHINING SOULS premiered at the Traverse, Edinburgh in 1996, directed by Ian Brown. Written for four women and six men, it went on to have successful productions in Lonodn, Chicago and most recently at the Tron in Glasgow.

It's Anne's wedding day. Her past is a Pandora's box of horror and loss and today it gets opened. Haunted by the memory of the suicide of her twin sons, Anne seeks solace in two boyfriends, both called Billy, one of whom she will marry that day. Ten weird and wonderul characters get caught up in the esnuing pandemonium in the East End of Glasgow. All day they seems com[elled to invoke worlds beyond this one - until finally, before dusk, they cross to the other side. The result is a play which transcends lunacy.

'Hannan's writing is so brimful of confidence as to make it both hilarious and heartbreaking...full of wishing and hoping, this is a sad, beautiful and profound piece of work'.
Neil Cooper, The Herald

'carries a real touch of greatness about it, and a resonance that might be heard today in almost any city in the West.
Joyce Macmillan, The Scotsman

'Hannan weaves weird and wonderful characters together with a beautifully sympathetic dialogue.'
Mark Brown, The Guardian

'[Hannan] has a density of expression, a control of populous scenes and dramatic development and a sheer verve which few writers, living or dead, can touch'.
The Sunday Times

SHINING SOULS is published by Nick Hern.
