His many stageplays include KING OF THE FIELDS, MOON STREET and new versions of Chekhov’s THE CHERRY ORCHARD, UNCLE VANYA, THE SEAGULL and THE THREE SISTERS, and Strindberg’s COMRADES. He has recently completed an adaptation of Chekhov’s short story THE BALCK MONK. His most recent play, CARS AND BOYS, premiered at Dundee Repertory Theatre in Spring 2014. His children’s titles, including THE JUNGLE BOOK, CINDERELLA, PETER PAN and MERLIN THE MAGNIFICENT, were first performed at The Glasgow Citizens Theatre, The Edinburgh Lyceum Theatre and Birmingham Repertory Theatre and have since been staged throughout the UK and worldwide, most recently in the USA, Finland, Holland, Sweden and by Den Nationale Scene in Norway, the theatre founded by Ibsen, and by Theater Der Jugend in Vienna. His adaptations of HANSEL & GRETEL and KENSUKE'S KINGDOM were both nominated for the TMA Best Children's Production of the Year Award.
A new narrated version of THE SNOW QUEEN for music by Savourna Stevenson was premiered by the RSNO in December 2013. Many of Stuart’s plays are published by Nick Hern Books. THE PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN and GRANNY AND THE GORILLA were published in 2012 in the USA by Samuel French/Baker Plays.
Current screen projects include an adaptation of DOCTOR GLAS by Hjalmar Soderberg in development with Makar Productions, and original screenplays BODY AND SOUL, MANTA RAY and THE MIDNIGHT PRINCE. His short film SOMEBODY'S WEE NOBODY won the Gold Award at the Chicago International Film Festival. Stuart’s television credits include THE OLD COURSE and the film WORKHOUSES which won the BBC Pharic McLaren Award for Best Script and Best Production.
